Our Product: The Blood

The blood is a living tissue that runs through the body carrying oxygen and nutriment to the organs. It is produced at the bone marrow located at the flat bones: vertebrae, ribs, hips, skull and sternum. It is composed of blood cells: red blood cells or erythrocyte, white blood cells or leukocytes, and platelets or thrombocytes.

After the collection, a blood bag is forwarded to the fractionation, where it will be separated in four hemocomponents (parts of the blood).

The erythrocytes (red blood cells) are used in cases of anemia (accidents, surgeries, transplantations, chronic diseases etc.). Platelet concentrate is used in patients with anti-cancer and transplantation treatment to avoid and treat bleeding. The plasma and cryoprecipitate are intended for patients with change of coagulation and Thrombosis and can be transformed into blood products. The concentration of leukocytes (white blood cells) is used to treat infections in the deficiency of white blood cells. The platelets are useful to prevent bleeding (transplantations, chemotherapy, etc.).

Afterward these procedures, the bags are stored in a special place with the appropriate temperature for conservation, awaiting tests for Chagas disease, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and C and HTLV-i and II, using specific techniques and methods before they are released for transfusion, according to current legislation.

After the confirmation of the results, the bags are approved to the using and they are transferred to Pró-Sangue storage, available to 128 hospitals from São Paulo Metropolitan Zone.

To attend this demand, the Pró-Sangue collects 12,000 bags and makes about 108 thousand serologic examinations and 100 thousand immunological ones monthly.

SBlood Cycle System

The Pró-Sangue has developed and implemented in 1994 the Blood Cycle System, whose the main objective is to increase the security and turn the informations process in every stages of the operation easier, through the using of bar code that allows interconnection with laboratory analysis equipment as well.

This system encloses all the processes of a blood bank operating cycle, since the capture of donors to the supply to the transfusion, collection, fractioning, serological and immunological tests and storage.

All access to this system are logged and monitored, ensuring total confidentiality to the informations.
